Winston Churchill - by Alexander Paen

Winston Churchill was a proud supporter of Capitalism, but he opposed Communism. During World War II, his motivational speeches and never say die attitude kept Britain going when it looked like defeat was on the cards. However, he also cared about the people, which greatly enhanced his popularity. Because he was well liked by the people, but also a determined warrior in battle, he was a sensational leader. He did a phenomenal job of leading the British people during an excruciating time in World War II.

The Eastern Front

The powers fighting on the Eastern theatre were Russia, a well trained and equipped force, Austria, which lacked resources and equipment, and Germany, a better prepared and organized military force. However, because the Russian army was so large, and suffered from problems of inadequate transportation (moving troops and supplies), it was not as agile and effective a fighting force.

The similarities between battles on the Western and Eastern fronts were that both had profound impacts and influences on the latter half of the 20th century, reshaping boundaries for countries. Also, both fronts suffered many casualties, although the East suffered more.

The differences between the battles on the Western fronts and the Eastern fronts were sometimes very stark. For instance, on the Eastern front, the battles were very gruesome, resulting in more than three million soldiers dying, and three times that many wounded. The Eastern front military powers were usually ill-equipped and lacked decisive military decision making. The Western front powers,  Britain, France, and the United States, had better equipment, wiser fighting strategies, and gained greater fame.

The causes for the beginning of the Great War included a regional conflict between tiny Serbia and the huge empire of Austria-Hungary, which was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist. Nationalism was strong throughout Europe among many countries, and this also led to rivalries, and also to new alliances between countries. Aggressive nationalism caused problems, especially between France and Germany. In Eastern Europe, the Slavic people felt it was their duty to defend all Slavs, including those living in Serbia. The Archduke ignored the wave of anti-Austrian sentiment in Serbia, and that led to his assassination. His death was an excuse for the Austrian-Serbia empire to wage war against Serbia and the Slavs. However, because of the new alliances created in Europe, once war broke out, each side was able to call on their allies to help them in the fight. Serbia had Russia and France on its side. Germany was against France in joining the conflict, and then declared war on France. Britain then joined in against Germany, and now many countries were in the Great War.

Hi, my name is Alexander Paen.

The movie that I am best identified with is Up, because I like to have an adventurous life. I enjoy trying different things growing up, and you never know where you might end up. It is very worthwhile in life to have a dream, but it is important to fight through many setbacks. Some are minor, and some are major. But the important thing is to believe in yourself, or you will not be successful. If Carl gave up on his dream trip to Paradise Falls after Ellie passed away, he would never have been on the incredible adventure he went on with Russell.
